I had a pretty vivid dream last night. I jumped into a pool, and it turned out to be much deeper than I expected. There was a ladder in the pool near where I jumped in. I reached for it to climb up out of the water, but it was out of reach. I was suspended between the top and bottom of the pool, and I couldn't actually see the surface or the bottom. All I could see was the ladder which I could never reach. Of course, this produced a feeling of suffocation. It was not a pleasant dream at all.

When I woke up, I realized the reason for the dream. I was having a major asthma attack. I haven't had an asthma attack in several years. So, I don't have a good inhaler anymore. I'll need to go see the doctor about it next week if I don't get better before then. I suffered through an eight hour shift at work, taking frequent rest breaks to catch my breath. Advil helps a little because if cuts down some of the inflammation. As I left work, I remembered one thing my doctor had told me years ago when I first had asthma problems. Caffeine helps. So, I went to the closest coffee shop and got a drink with extra espresso. Wow. It helped a lot. It was amazing. So, I decided to stop and get some caffeine tablets. I don't know if they'll help as well as the coffee, but I'm willing to try. At least they'll fit in my pocket while I'm at work tomorrow.

So, how is everyone else today?

Don't know about caffeine tablets, but I learned about extra-strong, black coffee when I was involved in an asthma study in the 90s (in Cincy, before I moved here). The combination of the hot liquid and the caffeine opens up airways and mimics what the albuterol does.

But you should still get an inhaler.

That year I learned the two things can help as an emergency "band-aid": the coffee, as you found out; and hot and sour soup. It is one of the best excuses for Chinese food EVER.

Feel better soon.

Well, I'll be taking my tea bags with me too. So, I'll have hot tea on my breaks. I will go see the doctor for a new inhaler next week.

Tea will work to calm you down, but only strong coffee has the albuterol-like effects. Apparently, even instant coffee doesn't work as well.

That I found out the hard way.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. There's a health food store next door to where I work. They always have fresh brewed coffee.

Definitely get the inhalor, but if you can get your hands on some ephedrine tablets, that might help, too. When we had them at my store, they said on the package that they were 'bronchial dilators.' You'll have to sign for them if you find them as the gov't started cracking down on their sales when it was discovered that they were a big ingredient in crystal meth.

It was scary waking up feeling that way, especially after that dream.

It's apparently been a sudden problem for a lot of people living in this area. Many of my coworkers said they were having trouble too.

I was okay today when I remembered to take it easy. I just need to remember to not over exert myself for the next few days.

*hugs*

I will. I promise.
